The idea behind Infant Swimming Resource was born in 1966 when its founder, Harvey Barnett, Ph.D, was just 18 years old. As an active lifeguard, Barnett witnessed the tragic aftermath when a neighbor's child drowned. At that moment, he vowed to do everything possible to ensure not one more child drowns. Barnett began teaching young children to swim and observed how they responded to certain types of communication, instruction and different techniques -- even with non-verbal infants. This was the beginning research phase for what is now Infant Swimming Resource’s comprehensive infant swimming education and Self-Rescue program. Today, Dr. Barnett, is recognized by the State Board of Medical Examiners in Florida, Arizona and California, and is the only, non-medical doctor that has been invited to speak on the topic of pediatric drowning prevention during Pediatric Grand Rounds presentations at hospitals across the United States.

The Minnesota Synchronettes(MNS)is a non-profit U.S. Synchronized Swimming (USSS) club that practices in the west metro areas of the Twin Cities (Minneapolis and St. Paul) and competes in numerous USSS synchronized swimming meets and championships throughout the year. Synchronized swimming is a sport for swimmers who enjoy music, dance, and team camaraderie. Most of the swimmers join the club to learn new skills; have fun; and excel at local, regional and national levels. Swimmers work out 8 to 11 months a year based on their achievement at regional, zone, and national events. The club includes athletes between the ages of 6 and 19 who reside in 12-15 cities in the area.

One of our goals for the summer is to help boys develop initiative and to plan their time. Counsellors announce activities after the meals. Boys are scheduled for an activity about one third of the time. The rest of the time they choose from the options that the counsellors announce. We require the boys to keep busy, but it is up to them to shape their time as they choose. Counsellors work with boys to use time effectively. We encourage them to try everything in their first year, to be “renaissance campers, ” and later to concentrate on their greatest interests.

The Physical Therapy Department at the Hutchinson Clinic treats clients with musculoskeletal, orthopedic, and neurological conditions upon physician referral. The department also accepts referral from non-Clinic physicians. The department is staffed by one full time Physical Therapist by the name of Mark Hall. Treatment programs are developed in consultation with physicians and may include physical modalities, therapeutic exercise instruction, work reconditioning programs, hydrotherapy, and home exercise instruction. The department equipment includes Cybex strengthening and aerobic conditioning equipment, as well as physical modalities such as heat, ice, ultrasound, traction, electrical stimulation, and massage.
