A UDS is a diagnostic procedure that is performed in the office during which a very small catheter is placed through the urinary channel into the bladder for purposes of filling the bladder with fluid and monitoring pressures. A second catheter may also be placed just inside the anal opening to help measure the pressures that occur around the bladder during normal functioning. A UDS is performed primarily to help diagnose disorders of the lower urinary tract. These include urinary leakage, symptoms of obstruction of the urinary tract, as well as symptoms that may occur in individuals with neurologic conditions. With the information gathered from urodynamics study, your physician will be better able to diagnose and thus treat a wide variety of urologic abnormalities and diseases. Most patients report minimal symptoms following the procedure. The catheters that are utilized are sterile catheters that are very small and placed in a medically clean manner.

Back strain is a fairly broad category called “soft tissue injury, ” which covers muscles, tendons and ligaments. About 80% of back and neck pain is muscle-related. The stomach muscles, or abdominals, enable the back to bend forward. They also assist in lifting. The abdominals work with the buttock muscles to support the spine. The oblique muscles go around the side of the body to provide additional support to the spine. Another type of strain relates to spinal ligaments that run in front and in back of the vertebral bodies. Tendons, which also connect muscles in the spine, can develop inflammation, or tendonitis. Some people believe that part of what makes the back muscles more prone to strain is that they are shorter than other big muscles in the body. The muscles in our thighs that enable us to walk, run and jump are longer and less prone to strain. It’s very unusual to strain a thigh muscle.

Your first visit with our medical staff will be with one of our nurses. She will weigh you and take your blood pressure. You will then be placed in an examination room for an EKG and possibly a chest x-ray. These tests provide important clinical information which will help the physician during the exam. Before the EKG, you will be given a gown and then asked to disrobe above the waist. Electrodes will be put on each arm and leg and at six points on your chest. An EKG records the electrical activity of the heart. It is a painless test which determines the electrical conduction of the heart and the heart rhythm.
