The first Junior League was founded in 1901 by a 19-year-old New York City college student, Mary Harriman. Moved by the suffering she saw all around her, Harriman mobilized a group of 80 other young women to work at a settlement house in lower Manhattan. The Junior League idea spread rapidly across the country, and by 1921 more than 40 Leagues joined together to form the Association of Junior Leagues. In 1925, Mrs. Lawrence F. Tucker, with ten charter members, formed the Junior League of Norfolk, and their first community service was providing transportation to city agencies. The Junior League of Norfolk-Virginia Beach, Inc. (JLNVB), has provided hundreds of thousands of dollars in direct grants to various community organizations, ranging from the cultural (Academy of Music), to the educational (Literacy Project PALS), to social welfare (ForKids, Inc.).

Formed on July 4, 1838, the Alumni Association of the University of Virginia was the sixth such group organized in the United States. A charter was granted to the University near the end of the nineteenth century by the General Assembly of Virginia. The association was originally housed in Pavilion VII on the Lawn of the Academical Village. In 1936 it moved to its current location, the Kappa Phi House on Emmet Street. The purposes for which the Association is formed are to aid, strengthen, and expand in every proper and useful way the University of Virginia and its work, and to develop, strengthen, and utilize the bonds of interest, sympathy and affection existing between the University and its alumni and among the alumni themselves.
