DOUGLAS B MILLER, COMPUTER PROGRAM DESIGNER - Interview

Interview

The computer language

3/31/2016

Today most people don't need to know how a computer works.  Most people can simply turn on a computer or a mobile phone and point at some little graphical object on the display, click a button or swipe a finger or two, and the computer does something.  An example would be to get weather information from the net and display it.  How to interact with a computer program is all the average person needs to know. But someone like Douglas B Miller does all the work behind.

Cylex 1. What is your experience as a developer and computer programming?

DOUGLAS B MILLER:  I have done this since 1990 and have made many MS-DOS based custom programs for businesses up until 1997, when I switched over to Windows. I program in C, C++, C#, Corel Paradox, Microsoft Access, php, css, html and Visual Foxpro. I make websites as well as Android enterprise apps. Much of the programming work I do is for manufacturing businesses, because of their specialized tasks that don't typically lend themselves well to canned software solutions. In other words, I occupy a niche. I also perform PC troubleshooting tasks for people in my local area of northeast Ohio.

Cylex 2. What are some of the applications you created and  you are very proud of?

DOUGLAS B MILLER:  I have made desktop applications for order entry, invoicing, quoting, job costing, database management, sales reporting, job card, purchase order, receivables, payables with check writing and general ledger + websites.

Cylex 3. How does your pricing work and what payment methods do you accept?

DOUGLAS B MILLER:  I accept cash, checks, money orders and traveler's checks. I never really had a need to set up with credit cards. As for my pricing and payment policy, it is best to visit my "Terms of Service" website at http://www.analyzohiosoftware.com/tos.html - it explains everything in a concise manner.

Cylex 4. What operating systems do your programs support?

DOUGLAS B MILLER:  I don't program for Apple OS - just Windows: ME/XP/Vista/7/8/8.1 and 10.

Cylex 5. What are some of the current projects you’re working on?

DOUGLAS B MILLER:  I currently make selected additions and modifications to a Corel Paradox order entry/invoicing/sales reporting system I set up long ago for a long term customer. Another long term customer, an industrial pattern shop west of Cleveland, just gave me a new project to make a Visual Foxpro order entry/job costing system much like theirs for a tool and die shop they own in Pennsylvania. I keep busy, though I'm always open to new business!

Cylex 6. What do you like about what you do and yet, after so many years, still working in the same field?

DOUGLAS B MILLER:  I like the challenge of finding solutions to programming projects and troubleshooting jobs. I'm always learning something new - it's never the same old thing over and over, which keeps it interesting. I also like the great people I meet - they are so nice to work for and chat with!

Almost all of the computer programming these days is done with high-level programming languages. Some of us speak more than a language. Yet, computer language is one that not many can learn. If you’d like to know more about Douglas B Miller and the work he does, just feel free to contact him.
