Family Chiropractic Plus - Interview

Are you experiencing physical pain?

Chiropractic is a natural form of health care that uses spinal adjustments to correct these misalignments and restore proper function to the nervous system, helping your body to heal naturally. Chiropractic doesn't use drugs or surgery. Rather, a chiropractic spinal adjustment-the application of a precise force to a specific part of the spinal segment-corrects the misalignment, permitting normal nerve transmission and assisting your body to recuperate on its own.

Cylex: What conditions do you treat as a chiropractor?

Family Chiropractic Plus: As a chiropractor we treat irritations to the nervous system that usually arise from abnormalities of normal joint function.  That may be an accurate answer but not necessarily helpful to someone wondering if a chiropractor can help them.  Realize that when the nervous system is irritated it leads to all sorts of symptoms.  Your nervous system controls every organ and tissue in your body.  Traditionally chiropractors can help with back pain, neck pain, bad posture, headaches, arm or leg pain, arm or leg numbness, loss of coordination and much more.  I also practice a technique called Nasal Specific which helps sinus function.  It can help with headaches, snoring, only breathing out of part of your nose and more.  Not every chiropractor adjusts extremities but I have made sure I am competent in adjusting every major extremity from knees and ankles to shoulders, elbows and wrists.

Cylex: Does your chiropractic treatment require a referral from an MD?

Family Chiropractic Plus: It does not.  Chiropractors are considered portal of entry doctors.  It is within our purview to see any patient for anything and to know whether it is something that can be helped with chiropractic or if that patient needs to be referred to another professional.

Cylex: What type of education and training do you have?

Family Chiropractic Plus: I graduated from Jesuit High School, Tampa, Florida (4 years.)  I got my Bachelor’s degree from Loyola University, New Orleans (4 more years.)  I achieved my Doctorate of Chiropractic from Life Chiropractic College West (4 more years.)

Cylex: Please tell us one thing you enjoyed/learned in every country where you practiced.

Family Chiropractic Plus: In England there was so much that was ancient and old.  Cathedrals built in the 1600’s, castles built in the 1100’s.  The British were also enamored of my funny American accent!  In N. Ireland there were more ancient castles and I got to learn more about the issues between the British Loyalists and the Irish Republicans.  In Australia no one cared about my accent as it is a very multicultural country.  I very much enjoyed their laid back attitude, spending time in the Australian bush and seeing an environment populated with plant life like I had never seen before.  It was also great to go into the back garden (back yard) and see a koala, echidna, kingfisher or even a carpet python!

Cylex: Is chiropractic appropriate for children? In what type of situations? (please give some examples)

Family Chiropractic Plus: Of course it is.  And advised as well.  Everyone should have their spine checked by a chiropractor and maintaining your spine is also crucial.  If at no other times, children should have their spines checked at least 5 times as they develop:

1.  After the birth.  Just getting born is one of the most traumatic experiences our bodies will ever go through.  Many many times, the child’s head and neck are twisted and manhandled in an effort to help them come into this world.  Please do not think your child isn’t affected by this if you had a C-section.  C-sections can have many unwanted side effects for the child and the mother.

2.    When he/she can hold their head up while on their belly.  This is when the forward curve in the cervical spine (neck) begins to develop.

3.    When he/she begins to crawl.  This is when the child’s integration between the right and left side of their brains is developing.

4.    When he/she begins to sit up.  This is when the forward curve in the lumbar spine (low back) begins to develop.

5.    When he/she begins to stand and walk.  An important time for continued neural integration.  And during the first 2 years of life children fall down, on average, 1500 times!

Cylex: What conditions do you care for in your  health center and what are some of the most common ones?

Family Chiropractic Plus: Some of the more common problems we see are: infantile colic, infantile and adult torticollis, low back pain, neck pain, pain in the joints of the extremities, radiating pain, headaches, automobile injuries, sports injuries, sinus problems, scoliosis, pregnancy related issues, arthritis, sciatica, surgery prevention, whiplash, PMS and more.

Cylex: What would be some health advice you’d give to the reader of this interview from the point of view of a chiropractor?

Family Chiropractic Plus: Posture is the window to your spine.  Look at your posture, evaluate your families’ posture and don’t write your posture off as too difficult to change.  Posture is a “which came first?” thing.  Is your posture causing your problems or are your problems causing your posture?  After that, get your spine (and your posture) professionally checked by a chiropractor.  Chiropractic is all about human performance and function.  When we raise your body’s performance to a higher level, you will feel better, have more energy, get sick less and get injured less.  Yes, we have plenty of patients that get adjusted a few times, feel better and then stop their care when their symptoms go away.  Then they’ll call you when their symptoms return.  Chiropractic works better as a lifestyle choice.  We try to teach our patients that it is better to stay healthy and prevent problems rather than wait until your body breaks down and then try to fix it.
